Trace oxygen present in unsaturated hydrocarbons can adversely affect downstream units and therefore must be completely removed. This catalyst is designed for low-temperature deoxygenation with added hydrogen, effectively eliminating trace adsorbed free oxygen from unsaturated hydrocarbons.
For instance, in the liquid propylene feedstock used for the low-pressure oxo synthesis of butanol and octanol, the presence of trace oxygen reduces the activity of the precious metal rhodium catalyst. By using a precious metal Pd/Al2O3 catalyst, trace oxygen can be removed through the low-temperature H2-O2 reaction to form water, without triggering unwanted hydrogenation reactions.
